Stop Human Trafficking

The Problem

Trafficking is the business of stealing people’s freedom for a profit. (Paid child rape) Traffickers use force, fraud and coercion to compel a person in to sex acts, labor enslavement and other services against his or her will. Trafficking can happen to anyone. Traffickers identify and leverage their victim’s vulnerabilities. Big risk factors for trafficking include someone who has made a recent relocation, someone who has a substance abuse problem, someone with mental health concerns, runaways or homeless youth and youth in the child welfare system.

Traffickers span all racial, ethnic and gender demographics. Some use their privilege, wealth and power as a means of control. Some have the same socio-economic oppression as their victims. They can be individuals, business owners, gangs/networks, parents/family, intimate partners and powerful corporate and government representatives. Victims are controlled by physical, economic and emotional abuse and threats. Victims are isolated from their friends and family. Victims become trapped and fear leaving their situation. Traffickers control them through trauma, shame, emotional attachments and physical threats to them and their families.

The number of people who are trafficked in the US every year are notoriously under reported. The number of children reported missing in 2019 in the US was 421,394. The number of children reported missing per day in the US in 2019 was over 1100.

Human trafficking is a $150 billion global industry with $99 billion from sex trafficking. $32 billion of the $99 billion is in the U.S.
The U.S. is the world’s largest sex buyer (International Labor Association)
Sex trafficking is the 2nd largest criminal Industry and the fastest growing
There is approximately 300,000 sex-trafficked children in the US at any given time
83% of sex trafficked victims in the U.S. are Americans, not foreigners
The trafficked victim is forced to have sex 7-15 times per day on average (Polaris Project)
Trafficked children can be any age but those most highly sought after are between the ages of 12-14
The life expectancy of a trafficked child is 7 years
88% of active sex trafficking cases (2018) used online sites and apps. 42.5% of victims in those cases were recruited on-line
98% of online predators were strangers to their victims when they targeted them
American teens spend up to 9 hours a day using online media. 90% of school kids, including many schools, use mobile devices
71% of teens admit to hiding what they do online from their parents and block parents from seeing apps and messages
25% of youth ages 11-18 admit to being contacted on Fortniteby a stranger (2018)
